The Florida Legislature cut all state funding for public libraries last Wednesday, and Director of Libraries Danny Hales said the effect here will be devastating if the money isn't restored.
"It would be absolutely catastrophic," Hales said.
"Obviously we would have to close the Branford location with significantly reduced hours in Live Oak."
Hale said "a significant number" of employees at the Live Oak branch staff would lose their jobs as well.

The Florida State House took up a bill Tuesday that would make a federal background check mandatory before anyone can begin working as a caregiver.
Lawmakers opened the door for volunteers to be exempt from the mandatory background checks.
"We have people that go into nursing homes with their dogs to let the elderly people pet them," said the bill's architect, Rep. Bill Snyder, (R-Stuart).

With the NCAA basketball tournament about to get underway, I decided to look back into the Political Junkie archives at the March Madness brackets I put together a year ago.
Last March 19, I listed 32 potential (and admittedly some far-fetched) Republican presidential candidates for 2012.
The idea was nothing more than a fun way to "determine" who would be the GOP nominee against President Obama in 2012.

Florida needs to invest more in higher education, University of North Florida President John Delaney told attendees at Cornerstone's quarterly luncheon Tuesday afternoon.
Outlining a proposal that calls for a $1.75 billion increase in funding for the state's 11 public universities, Delaney, who served as interim chancellor of the state's university system from September 2008 to September 2009, said the time has come for Florida to change its model.

As a member of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) in south Florida, Myra Farr has spent over five decades volunteering with programs that help troubled children, abused women and homeless families.
In a ceremony late last week, Governor Charlie Crist presented Farr with the Point of Light award for her dedication to helping others.
"Myra is such a one-of-a-kind spirit, spending more than five decades helping others and making her community a better place to live, work and play," said Governor

Gov. Charlie Crist (R., Fla.) is on Capitol Hill today, railing against the Obama administration's space policy.
He tells National Review Online that he's also keeping a close eye on the health-care debate.
Crist says if Obamacare passes, it would be "devastating" for Florida.
I'm concerned about them trying to ram this through. -Charlie Crist

Chain Gang/Whips and Chains/ Winds of change Charlie Crist is now, and always will be nothing more than a political prostitute. He has appeared on a ballot of some kind for as long as I can remember. The fact that he won't term out as Governor doesn't surprise me, he has obviously reached his level of incompetence, and knows it. Say good-night Charlie.

Governor Crist should tell the America public why he entered a contract for over $1 billion dollars to buy the sugar company under bogus pretense of intending to clean up the Everglades when tax payer money footed a investigation into the run-off in the Glades and foudn that big sugar were partly responsible, at the same time teachers and other people were losing jobs. The truth is well-known.
